Abstract

The Seventeenth International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling (ICAPS-07) was held in Providence, Rhode Island in September 2007. It covered the latest theoretical and practical advances in planning and scheduling. The conference was co-located with the Thirteenth International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP-07). The program consisted of tutorials, workshops, system demonstrations, a doctoral consortium, and three days of technical presentations mostly in parallel sessions. ICAPS-07 also hosted the second edition of the International Competition on Knowledge Engineering for Planning and Scheduling. This report describes the conference in more detail.

Author Biographies

Mark Boddy, Adventium Labs

Mark Boddy is Chief Scientist at Adventium Labs, a small non-profit research lab in Minneapolis, Minnesota (U.S.A.). He is an internationally recognized expert in several areas of computer science research, including planning and scheduling and constraint-based reasoning. During the past twenty years he has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles in journals and conference proceedings, presented tutorials on temporal reasoning and constraint-based reasoning at international conferences, and given numerous invited talks. He has served on program committees for a wide range of technical conferences, including AAAI, IJCAI, UAI, KR, and ICAPS. He has served as a journal reviewer for Artificial Intelligence Journal, Computational Intelligence, IEEE Transactions on Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence, and the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, and as a program reviewer for NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Currently, he is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research. He was a co-chair of ICAPS-07.

Maria Fox, University of Strathclyde

Maria Fox is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Strathclyde, in Scotland, UK. She is an expert in temporal and numeric planning and contributed temporal and metric modelling to the PDDL family of standard planning domain representation languages. She has published a large number of peer-reviewed articles and conference papers in planning and has been an active member of the planning community serving on the program committees of ICAPS, AAAI, IJCAI and many other conferences, and the editorial boards of JAIR, AI Communications and Artificial Intelligence. She has been an associate editor of JAIR and is now a member of the JAIR advisory board. In addition to these roles she has guest-edited a number of special issues in journals including JAIR, the Journal of Scheduling and Artificial Intelligence. She also plays an active role in the assessment of research funding applications in the UK, as a member of the peer review body of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Maria was a co-chair of ICAPS-07.

Sylvie Thiébaux, Australian National University

Sylvie Thiébaux is an associate professor at the Australian National University where she leads the Diagnosis, Planning, and Optimisation Group, and a principal researcher in National ICT Australia. Her research interests are in automated planning, model-based diagnosis, search, and reasoning under uncertainty. She has published many peer-reviewed articles in international journals and conference proceedings in those areas. Her current research focuses on developing planning and diagnosis techniques that can handle larger and more complex problems featuring uncertainty, time, and coordination among multiple entities. She regularly serves on the program committee of the major international conferences, such as IJCAI, AAAI, ECAI, and ICAPS. She is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and is co-editing, with Maria-Fox, a special issue of the Artificial Intelligence journal on Automated Plan Generation Systems. She was co-chair of ICAPS-07.
