Abstract

Civil society organizations (CSOs) have played a central role in defending human rights and advancing social justice—yet, their perspectives remain underexplored in academic literature linking social justice to AI practice. Our study centers CSO voices in a reflection on recent recommendations for AI practitioners striving to work towards social justice. We conducted a CSO community workshop and interviews with CSO advocates. Participants critically reflected on the existing recommendations and collaboratively articulated constructive pathways for action. Our findings highlight the value of CSOs as crucial and pragmatic allies towards social justice: our participants acknowledged structural and organizational barriers, without considering them a reason for inaction. Instead, they invited practitioners to take proactive steps within their sphere of influence. Indeed, CSO priorities highlight the key role of motivated practitioners, emphasizing practices that can be exercised by everyone and everyday: humility, respect for diverse voices and perspectives, and a willingness to see and create openings for strategic, pragmatic actions.
